CCS has been a key focus since 2002 when he began working with Schlumberger to develop the related company strategy and project portfolio and then with the International Energy Agency in 2007, where he led the development of the publication of “CO2 capture and storage – a major carbon abatement option” in 2008.
Kamel has broad experience in the private energy sector across all continents from his time with Schlumberger where his roles included Group Chief Economist, and Technology Center President. He was the Chief Economist at ADNOC from 2017 to 2018.
Kamel was appointed Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines in Tunisia between 2014 and 2015 and from 2015 to 2017 was the IEA Director for Sustainability, Technology and Outlooks. He and his teams were responsible for the development of leading long-term energy outlooks, technology and climate policies, and the Agency’s CCUS projects.
In 2019 he created an energy transition consulting company in the United Arab Emirates (Nomadia Energy Consulting), and in 2020 became the Chairman of DAMORPHE, a Houston-based technology start-up. From 2021 to 2023 Kamel was the worldwide President of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, with over 120,000 members worldwide. He has also coauthored 19 books and 180 technical papers.’
